This site will serve as the official course blog for Principles of Population Health Science (PHS 795) offered at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

There is not currently, and will likely never be any policy maker’s “fantasy equation”, with health as a dependent variable, a function of a long list of well specified (and behaved) independent variables, each with their own coefficient showing relative magnitude and significance. One wishes there were. – Greg Stoddart (The Challenge of Producing Health in Modern Economies, 1995)

If there were a “fantasy equation,” our jobs would be a whole lot easier, and this blog would be unnecessary. Instead, we will use this space to discuss the messy, quasi-scientific and very real world of population health. Have at it!
